The image is decoded, drawn to a canvas and re-encoded as JPEG at quality 80. Fine detail your eye ignores is discarded, cutting the file to a fraction of the original while dimensions stay the same.

For JPG and WebP it is lossy — you trade a little detail for a much smaller file, and you control how much. For PNG the tool applies lossless optimisation only.
